School of Medicine names new Department of Community Health chair

Vincent Mor, director of the Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research, has been named chair of the Department of Community Health at the Brown medical school. He succeeds Lois Monteiro.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Vincent Mor, professor of medical science in the Department of Community Health and director of the Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research, has been appointed chair of the Department of Community Health at the Brown University School of Medicine.

He succeeds Lois A. Monteiro, who will continue to serve the medical school as associate dean of medicine for faculty affairs. She is also professor of medical science in the Department of Community Health. Monteiro had been department chair since 1986.

Mor's appointment comes on the heels of plans in the medical school to expand both the number of epidemiology faculty and graduate programs in the Department of Community Health over the next several years.

In a letter to faculty, Donald J. Marsh, M.D., dean of medicine and biological sciences, said, "I am confident [Mor] will provide the leadership to advance the department and to make it even stronger than it already is."

The department, Marsh added, "has become the medical school's seed bed of innovation, and Lois deserves great credit for nurturing it to this position."
