A University statement
Susan Klein vs. Brown University
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Laura Freid, executive vice president of public
affairs and university relations for Brown University, issued the following
statement regarding the July 21 decision in Susan Klein vs. Brown
University:
We are pleased that a Rhode Island Superior Court jury, in a unanimous
decision, has upheld the position that Brown University’s psychological
services provided appropriate care that fully satisfied our responsibilities to
the student who committed suicide in 1990. We are particularly gratified that
the jury’s findings reaffirm that Dr. Ferdinand Jones, director of
psychological services at the time, served Brown and its students in a caring
and professional manner.
The death of any student is a tragic loss. Our sincere sympathies are
extended to the family and to all who still mourn the loss of Daniel
Shuster.
