University sets inauguration of Ruth Simmons for October 14, 2001

Ruth J. Simmons will be inaugurated as the 18th president of Brown University on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at 2 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Corporation of Brown University has set Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, as the date for the inauguration of Ruth J. Simmons as 18th president of the University.

The inauguration ceremony, which will begin with an academic procession at 2 p.m., will highlight a weekend in which many constituencies of the University will be visiting campus for annual meetings, academic forums and other events:

  • The Corporation, Brown’s governing body, customarily holds its fall meeting on the second weekend of October.

  • The Brown Alumni Association will present its William Rogers Award, Brown Bear Awards and a number of other awards during its annual Alumni Recognition Ceremony.

  • Saturday, Oct. 13, is Brown’s annual homecoming, featuring football against Princeton and other activities for alumni, students and friends of the University.

“The inauguration of Ruth Simmons will be an occasion for Brown to commemorate its 237-year history,” said Laura Freid, executive vice president for public affairs and University relations. “The Brown community will honor the richness of the University’s intellectual traditions and celebrate the promise of its future.”

Simmons, whose appointment was announced Nov. 9, will officially begin serving as Brown’s 18th president on July 1, 2001.

In addition to the inauguration ceremony, Inauguration Weekend will feature a variety of readings, performances, lectures and discussions by nationally recognized writers, artists, musicians, scholars and others. All events will be open to the public.
