Israeli-Palestinian panel canceled because of conflict in Middle East

The April 11 panel discussion between Yasser Abed-Rabbo, the Palestinian minister of culture and information, and Yossi Beilin, the former Israeli minister of justice, has been canceled because the speakers are unable to travel to the United States. (See original release 01-107.)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Due to the current conflict in the Middle East, the Israeli-Palestinian panel discussion set for April 11 in the Avon Theater has been canceled, according to the student group Common Ground, which had worked to bring the speakers to Providence.

Yasser Abed-Rabbo, the Palestinian minister of culture and information, and Yossi Beilin, the former Israeli minister of justice, had planned a U.S. speaking tour that included the April 11 stop in Providence. Neither speaker is able to travel to the United States because of the current conflict.

According to Seeds of Peace, a co-sponsor with Common Ground for the April 11 event, the U.S. speaking tour has been postponed at the request of Abed-Rabbo and due to the deteriorating situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Seeds of Peace plans to reschedule the tour, but the Providence stop is not likely to be rescheduled because the school year will be over.
