Annenberg Institute for School Reform
Community Involvement Program Joins Brown’s Annenberg Institute

The Community Involvement Program will be incorporated into the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University, enhancing the Institute’s efforts to strengthen the success and vitality of urban schools. The grass-roots school reform program was formerly housed at the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Corporation of Brown University has formally approved the incorporation of the Community Involvement Program (CIP), formerly housed at the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University, into the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University effective Sept. 1, 2006.

Created in 1996 by the staff of the Institute for Education and Social Policy at New York University, CIP provides training support, organizing strategy, data analysis, and policy research to support community-based action for school improvement in urban areas.

“The Annenberg Institute has long believed that community and family have a vital role to play in urban education,” said Warren Simmons, executive director of the Annenberg Institute. “The addition of CIP will enhance our ability to conduct applied research and evaluation in that area, strengthening the Institute’s capacity in a key component of its mission.”

Current CIP Director Norm Fruchter, will become director of the Institute’s work in community involvement, one of its three main areas of work, and join the Institute’s leadership team. He will report to the executive director.

“Annenberg’s network of partners and funders will expand our reach,” Fruchter said. “We have worked with the Institute for more than a decade, and we have long been impressed with the quality of their work and their commitment to the goals we share.”

The move will shift the CIP’s research and community-organizing activities and its 14 staff members to Annenberg. The CIP staff will remain in New York City with other Annenberg staff.
