American Men of Science

American Men of Science, a biographical directory of scientists, places stars next to the names of those scientists who are elected for this honor by their professional colleagues as leaders in research in their particular science. In the first edition in 1903, Brown graduates and faculty members so honored were John Howard Appleton 1863 (chemistry), Henry Parker Manning 1883 (mathematics), Hermon Carey Bumpus 1884 (zoology), Alfred D. Cole 1884 (physics), George W. Field 1887 (zoology), Winthrop J. V. Osterhout 1893 (botany), and Allen K. Krause ’01 (pathology), Carl Barus (physics), Edmund B. Delabarre (psychology), and Albert D. Mead (zoology). Starred in later editions were anatomists Edgar Allen ’15, George E. Coghill 1896, and Victor E. Emmel ’04 Sc.M.; astronomers Frederick Slocum 1895 and Harlan T. Stetson ’08; anthropologist Lester F. Ward; botanist Thomas Harper Goodspeed ’09; chemists Moses L. Crossley ’09 Raymond M. Fuoss ’32 Ph.D, Louis J. Gillespie ’08 John B. F. Herreshoff 1890, Charles A. Kraus, and William Albert Noyes, Jr.; geologist Arthur F. Buddington ’12; mathematicians C. Raymond Adams ’18, Raymond C. Archibald, Albert Arnold Bennett ’10, Derrick H.
