The NCIIA recognizes collegiate biomedical engineering innovations
AnemiCAM, a devise developed by biomed and engineering students Brown University, wins second prize and $2,500 in the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance BMEidea Awards. AnemiCAM is a light-reflecting device, to be manufactured for less than $30, that enables physicians to assess quickly and non-invasively hemoglobin levels by shining it in the lower eyelid and as a result better detect anemia.

Special care keeps nursing home residents out of hospital
Dr. David Dosa, an assistant professor of medicine at Brown University, offers his perspective on a new Canadian study of a program that monitors and treats nursing home residents for pneumonia. The study noted that the program saved a lot of money by keeping nursing home residents out of the hospital. Dosa noted some of the limitations the study. Healthday produces a daily report of health news for consumers and distributes the articles to member media. This article was reproduced on Web sites throughout North America, including the CBC.

New company formed with support of Brown University, Slater Technology Fund
Analytical Edge, Inc., a new company, will work with Brown University and receive funds from the Slater Technology Fund to develop and commercialize a new statistical methodology that could dramatically reduce the time and costs of performing clinical trials for new drugs and medical devices. Assistant Professor of Community Health Jeffrey Blume is the chief scientific officer for Analytical Edge. Charles Kingdon, associate vice president of the Brown Technology Partnership at Brown University, said that the formation of the new company “is part of a continuing effort by the University to bring the results of its research programs to practical application.”

Patrick Kennedy is "better" after treating dependency
At a press conference held on the Brown University campus, R.I. Rep. Patrick Kennedy told reporters that he will return to his duties in Washington, D.C., but that his mental health comes first. Kennedy had just completed a month-long treatment for substance abuse, and was at Brown to address a forum on the future of mental health care and addiction treatment. Corporation names Life Sciences Building, establishes professorships
The Corporation of Brown University voted to name the new $95-million Life Sciences Building after University benefactor Sidney E. Frank. The fellows and trustees also approved establishing four new professorships, voted to expand the size of the Brown Medical School student body, and acted to divest from eight additional companies currently conducting business in Sudan.
