POLICE ARREST BROWN

Police Rugby Ground

Hamilton, Bermuda

Saturday, March 27, 2010

We are thankful for the rugby notion of two halves as Brown allowed four tries (three converted) and was unable to score a point, for a 26-0 first half deficit. Although Brown did get to the Police goal line on at least two occasions, they could not cross the line in spite of a strong trailing wind because of poor passing or an occasional critical loss of possession. The Police are a big men's team; their size and strength took some getting used to.

The match looked grim as Brown regrouped for the second half, not only to climb the mountain, but to do so against a wind that blew the posts over. The match took on a different picture as Brown's defense began to hold back the physically superior Police forwards and bend, but not break, against the attacking backs. Brown's fitness was key to the Bear's resurgence.

Then, in an eight minute stretch, Brown's backline was first able to send outside center James McGinn'12, 25 meters for a try, converted by wing Sam Rabb'10. Five minutes later, the Police wing was run down and tackled by forward Ben Mossbarger'10 with flanker Rall Walsh'10 picking up the ball and feeding center Dow Travers'11 for a 50 yard burst for a second Brown try, again converted by Rabb. Rabb then took a pass from a driving ruck for a score, and with 15 minutes left in the match, Brown had closed the Police lead to 26-19.

Brown followed these heroics with a length of the field running and passing sequence but came up short of the line. The Brown momentum was finally broken when the Police took a scrum ball to the blind side for a try and a 31-19 score. Brown pressed on for one more try as McGinn passed to Rabb, who scored his third try as the match ended 31-24.

The referee for the match was Alan Hicks. The Bermuda Police hosted a dinner reception at the Police Clubhouse after the match.
