BEARS LOSE IN LACKLUSTER PERFORMANCE

Providence, Rhode Island
April 9, 2011

Brown did not play close to its potential in losing to Bentley College 29-15. Bentley on the other hand is in preparation for a run at the Collegiate Division II Nationals and clearly was the better team on the day. In preparation for the fall season, the spring matches are critical to squad development and leadership and little was accomplished on the day.

Brown started the match conceding two scrum possessions to Bentley in the Brown half which resulted in a Bentley try for a 5-0 deficit. But Brown came back, stealing a lineout from which scrum half Matt Leonard'14 ran 20 meters. Brown won the subsequent ruck, attacking the short side to fullback Sam Rabb'11 who passed to wing Dow Travers'12 for a try to tie the score at 5.

But that was the closest Brown would come to a win as the Bears were buried in an avalanche of poor tackles, penalties and lethargic play. Bentley scored twice more in the first half as Brown was unable to maintain any offensive momentum with the score 17-5.

As the second half began center Taylor Peak'12 fielded a poor Bentley clearing kick and safely rucked the ball. Flanker Landon Turley'12 ran the ball 10 meters and then hooker and co-captain Dan Levine-Spound'12 ran the final 15 meters for a try to narrow the Bentley lead 17-10.

Brown continued to have bursts of offensive success but could not maintain their shape or pattern and on the defensive side the lack of cohesion and aggression allowed two more Bentley tries for a 29-10 lead. Brown did muster a nifty blind side scrum attack for a 40 meter try, initiated by number eight Brent Zajaczkowski'12 who passed to scrum half Dan Tonderys'14, who fed Turley for the final 20 meters. But time ran out and the match ended 29-15.

Brown Seconds Tie Bentley
Bentley scored a converted try in the first half for a 7-0 halftime lead but the Bears came back in the second half and, with the Bentley backs very flat, fly half Blair Cameron'13 executed a clever grub kick through the backline which rolled over the goal line where Cameron touched it down for a try. Cameron's conversion tied the match at 7.
