Adversity brought out the best in the Brown 7's squad as they played a full 15's match on Saturday, April 9, then departed from Brown at 4:45 A.M. on the 10th to compete in the very first Ivy League Rugby 7's Tournament. By mid afternoon Brown's "A" squad had gone undefeated in four successive matches while our "B" team played two matches, winning one. Brown took home the Championship trophy and team co-captain and hooker Dan Levine-Spound was declared the Tournament MVP. However, even the most discerning observer would have to agree that the victory was a total team effort.

Coach John McGeachy, who has played 7's at the National level is a new coach at Brown and was instrumental in team preparation. Athletic Trainer Amanda Moran was also on hand to soothe the wounds of the squad. Fortunately, Brown suffered no injuries during the Tournament.

The format was two 4 team pools in which each team would play the other three in 14 minute matches of two 7 minute halves with a 2 minute halftime. Pool #1 was Brown, Columbia "B", Dartmouth and Penn. Pool #2 was Columbia "A", Cornell, Dartmouth "B" and Yale. At the conclusion of pool play, the two teams at the bottom of their respective pools played for 7th and 8th place. The third place teams played for 5th and 6th place. The second place teams played for 3rd and 4th, and the first place teams played for 1st and 2nd place.

Princeton had dropped out of the Tournament some time ago due to a conflict, and Harvard, due to its upcoming qualifying match for the National Collegiate Division I Championships, was a last minute cancellation. Both Dartmouth and host Columbia agreed to enter "B" Teams. Brown, Columbia and Dartmouth also brought second and third sides to give everyone some playing time.

Here's Brown's path to the Championship:

9:00 A.M.: Brown "B" 7, Yale "B" 15
The Brown B's, a virtual rookie team, opened the Tournament with a match against Yale's B's. Brown had only a few minutes to prepare for the match and made too many handling mistakes to win, but gave a good effort. Yale scored unconverted tries in both the first and second halves for a 10-0 lead. But midway through the second half, center Brent Zajaczkowski'12 put prop Chris Lamar'11 away for a nice run, then passed to hooker Rob Bentlyewski'13 for a try. Fly half Blair Cameron'13 drop kicked the conversion and Brown was behind 10-7 but on the attack. As the game ended Brown dropped a pass which Yale picked up and scored for the final match points.

Brown scored twice more in the first half. Rabb picked up the ball from a Powell tackle, scored and converted for a 14-0 lead. Then from a ruck, Rabb passed to Travers on the wing for the final 5 points. In the second half, Brown did not score and held Penn to one unconverted try.

12:30 P.M. Pool Match #3: Brown "A" 28. Dartmouth "A" 26
Dartmouth is competing this spring in a conference of the top 16 collegiate teams in the country. Also Dartmouth will compete in the National Collegiate 7's in June. Brown would have to play flawlessly to compete in this match, having not defeated Dartmouth since 1996. Brown took a step in the right direction, as wing Dow Travers intercepted a Dartmouth pass and ran 60 meters for the game's first try, converted by Rabb for a 7-0 lead. But Dartmouth came back, scoring twice and converting both to go ahead 14-7 at halftime.

Brown was awarded a free kick on Dartmouth's second half kickoff. Fly half Matt Leonard'14 put the ball through the mark and passed to Rabb who saw a gap and chipped ahead, fielded the kick, scoring and converting to tie the match at 14. Dartmouth then scored and converted, but center Rob Powell'11 made a break supported by Travers who scored after a 40 meter burst. Rabb kicked the conversion to tie the game at 21.

With only minutes left, Dartmouth scored in front of the posts but the conversion was missed, providing an opening for Brown. Dartmouth's subsequent kickoff ended up in touch with a lineout to Brown at midfield. The ball was patiently moved across the width of the field then back across to Rabb who turned on the jets and outran the cover defense, touching the ball down to tie the score once more. However, Rabb's two point conversion gave Brown the victory at full time.

This match served as a curtain raiser for the finals with Brown taking an early 5-0 lead on wing Chris Whittles'13 try which held up for the half. In the second half prop Chris Lamar'11 took a pass in the open field, sidestepped a defender and sprinted untouched for a try and a 10-0 "Brown lead. With a minute left in the match Dartmouth ran in one try but it wasn't enough.

2:15 P.M. Championship Match: Brown "A" 19, Columbia "A" 10
Columbia had swept through their Pool with great athleticism and speed. The question was whether the Brown defensive system could limit Columbia's scoring while finding enough scoring opportunities for the Bears. The answer was yes and yes. Hooker Dan Levine Spound scored twice, unwilling to be tackled and several open field tackles by center Rob Powell and wing Dow Travers sealed the defensive side of the match. Great distribution and tactical decisions by our freshmen halfbacks Matt Tonderys and Matt Leonard'14 were made throughout the four matches. Chaney Harrison11.5, Brent Zajaczkowski'12, Ryan Jones'14 and Landon Turley'12 all contributed to the effort.

Columbia got an early breakaway try which reinforced the explosiveness of Columbia, but a Columbia penalty was tapped by Leonard, passing to Levine-Spound for the scoring run and Rabb converting for a 7-5 lead at the half.

In the second half Brown controlled the early going, scoring on another Columbia penalty with Rabb getting both the score and conversion for a 14-5 lead. Minutes later a hard tackle by Brent Zajaczkowski'12 kept the ball deep in the Columbia end. Brown attacked to a ruck near the line and Levine Spound powered over for his second try. A late try by Columbia was not enough and Brown had won it all.
