BROWN RUGBY TAKES FIRST TWO IVY MATCHES

In the Ivy League’s inaugural 2009 fall season, Brown's First XV kicked off league play, defeating Columbia in New York on Saturday, September 19, 16-8, and then traveled to Cornell and beat the “Big Red” on Sunday, September 20, 21-10. The Brown Second XV lost to Columbia 10-5 but came back on Sunday to defeat Cornell 31-10.

Although Brown’s offense was inconsistent, the defense was strong, allowing but one try and a penalty in each of the First XV matches. This Saturday, Sunday schedule put tremendous demands on each player and the results are commendable under the circumstances.

Brown First XV v. Columbia

Brown came out strong against Columbia providing good pressure which resulted in fly half Zahid Jethani’13 scoring on 20 a meter penalty kick at 14 minutes for a 3-0 lead. Brown was unlucky to miss a penalty kick at 29 minutes but Columbia made a kick at 36 minutes to tie the match. Brown responded by going deep into Columbia territory and forcing a Columbia penalty. Jethani took a quick tap and passed to left wing Dow Travers’11 for an unconverted try and an 8-3 halftime lead.

In the second half Brown was on the board on the 55th minute as Jethani put center and co-captain Hao Li’10 through a gap for a another unconverted try and a 13-3 lead. Columbia scored within four minutes from a ruck possession to close the Brown margin 13-8.

At 26 minutes a Columbia player was sin-binned for 10 minutes and Brown took control of the match, kicking a penalty kick at 38 minutes to end the scoring. Brown played well between the 22’s but had trouble maintaining their structure at both the defensive and offensive ends of the field. Missed penalty kicks and two missed try conversions kept Brown’s margin of victory closer that it might have been.

Brown First XV v. Cornell

Brown didn’t play as well on Sunday due to fatigue, injuries, changes to the squads, and continued poor penalty and conversion kicking. Cornell jumped out to a 3-0 lead at 4 minutes with a penalty kick. Cornell continued to neutralize Brown, but at 18 minutes, Brown took a lineout at the Cornell 5 meter line and the backs sent fullback Rob Powell’12 over the line for an unconverted try and a 5-3 lead that held up through the half, even though Brown scrum half Dave Riley’10 was sin-binned at 35 minutes.

In the first 16 minutes of the second half, fullback Sam Rabb’10 kicked two penalties to increase the Brown lead to 11-3 and four minutes later, Brown, from a scrum on their own 30 meter line, scored the best try of the weekend as scrum half Dave Riley’10 spun the ball to fly half Zahid Jethani’13 who then passed to center Hao Li’10 to wing Ben Baker’10 and finally to fullback Sam Rabb’10 who beat the defense with a 40 meter finish for the try. Rabb then converted his try for an 18-3 Brown lead.

Cornell scored a converted try for 7 points and an 18-10 deficit at 68 minutes but Rabb kicked a penalty at full time to end the match for the 21-10 victory
