50th ANNIVERSARY CROWD LIFTS BROWN TO VICTORY

Providence, Rhode Island
October 16, 2010

In front a large Brown Rugby 50th anniversary crowd on a breezy but sun filled fall day, the team gave their supporters a good deal to cheer as Brown’s first XV beat Cornell 36-5. It took Brown the first half to overcome Cornell’s determination and aggression, but once on top, Brown controlled the match on this day.

Prior to the match, a plaque in honor of Brown Rugby founder David J. Zucconi was unveiled and commands a prominent location just inside the entrance to the field enclosure. This plaque is the permanent memorial to Dave and the major donors of the Brown Rugby Field and the dedication occurred exactly six years after the field was originally dedicated on Saturday, October 16, 2004.

Cornell restricted Brown to two tries in the first half, but was never a threat to score as Brown kept play in the Cornell end. Early on, flanker Chaney Harrison’11 scored to give Brown a 5-0 lead but it took Brown another 29 minutes before number 8, Greg Karwaski’11 broke with a number 8 pick up and ran a good 40 meters for a try which was converted by center Manny Koelliker’14 for a 12-0 Brown halftime cushion.

The coaches had elevated a few new players from the Second to the First side and as the second half kicked off, the confidence of this squad seemed to bloom. Over the next forty minutes, four Brown juniors crossed the line: hooker Dan Levine-Spound’12, center Brent Zajaczkowski’12, wing James McGinn’12 and wing Dow Travers’12 with freshman Manny Koelliker’14 converting twice.

With the score at 36-0, Brown conceded a try to Cornell in the 75th minute.

The match referee was Don Jennings.
