Brown v. Newport Rugby Club

Erickson Athletic Complex
Berylson Field
Brown University
Providence, Rhode Island

March 7, 2015: 1:00 P.M.

Brown opened its spring 2015 season in winter conditions on a cold, windy day with temperatures in the mid 30’s. Brown was clearly outplayed in this pre-season scrimmage by a very talented and strong Newport Rugby Club on the Brown field turf. Having had very limited outside training due to the massive snow cover that prevented playing on the turf fields until the day of this match, this first bit of contact against an experienced, physically bigger team was too much, too soon. It was also very unfortunate that a scrimmage scheduled a week earlier on February 28 against Providence College was cancelled due to unplayable field conditions; but college ruggers are resilient and will rebound from this match with renewed determination and commitment.

In spite of Newport’s overall dominance, Brown controlled possession for the first 10 minutes, but once Newport scored, the team’s commitment to the tackle and playing to the team’s pattern seemed to slowly erode. Against a good team, it takes a team effort to win and on this day, although there were moments of strong individual efforts with some occasional effective scrums, lineouts, and rucks/mauls,  rarely did all 15 provide the consistent decisions and effort needed against this opponent.  Newport’s very solid defense shut down Brown’s backline, although wing Placid Unegbo ran a ball over the line for a certain try but missed  the cones marking the goal area and did not touch the ball down.

Although the result is disappointing, playing very strong opposition should toughen Brown and improve its resolve. The squad has a number of new players that we hope, with experience from this season, will create greater competition for positions and improve all aspects of our game.

This match did allow Brown to substitute freely and see players in various positions and combinations as we begin to transition the team, playing  more younger players who will have to replace a number of  fall semester(2014) seniors who are no longer with us.

Brown loses to Newport in Second XV Match 20-5

A very enthusiastic but inexperienced Second XV, many of whom had their first match experience on the day, showed resilience and improvement throughout the match, losing 20-5, but after conceding three first half tries, held Newport to but one second half score.  With a number of rookies unable to play due to minor injuries, it is our goal to provide this group with enough match time to learn the basics of  rugby this spring. This match was a good start with rookie center Phil Smith scoring his first Brown try. The match allowed free substitutions which gave every healthy player a chance to play.
