THE WOMEN'S FILM FESTIVAL SYMPOSIUM

Audio from the Symposium is now available

Friday, October 15th, 2:30 P.M.
Room 166 Barus and Holley Building (George St. between Brook and Hope)

The Women's Film Festival symposium will take the form of a moderated discussion between our panelists, with significant opportunity for audience participation.

This symposium brings together a panel of distinguished feminist filmmakers and academics who will discuss the question: What do we mean by the idea of the women's film and what are its implications for feminist filmmaking theory and practice today? What even can be called a "women's film?" Is it a film made by women? Is it a film made for women? Does a women's film always promote feminist politics while problematizing conventional cinematic representations of women?

What are the histories of the women's film and why have many of these histories been made invisible by mainstream film historiography? How is the concept of the women's film orchestrated as a dialogue between academics, filmmakers, and viewing publics? What is at stake in posing these questions today in a panel discussion between women filmmakers and academics?
