Condyloma acuminatum

Cross section of vulvovaginal junction with marked hyperkeratosis lending the gross appearance of a white plaque

(in older terms "leukoplakia"). The importance of biopsying white lesions is that there may be benign, premalignant,

or malignant epithelial lesions beneath the plaque and it is virtually impossible to distinguish them with certainty

on clinical exam.  The surgical pathologist has the "final answer" diagnosis that dictates what sort of treatment

the patient receives, whether it is topical steroids, wide local surgical excision, or some other modality.
