Malakoplakia

 

 

These low and high magnification photos are from a lesion in the vaginal cuff. Malakoplakia is related to bacterial

infections, usually in the urinary tract where the lesion is most common. Soft, yellow mucosal plaques are present

grossly. Microscopically the lesions show infiltration with large foamy macrophages and lymphocytes. The arrow points to

a Michaelis-Gutmann body. Targetoid M-G bodies are also seen. M-G bodies represent calcium deposition in lysosomes.
