Coarse Course Outline

EN227 is an advanced graduate course on the theory and applications of the elastic behavior of solids.  Applications will be drawn from rubber elasticity,  biomechanics, and structural mechanics. The course prerequisites are EN221 and EN222.

1.                 Review of kinematics and kinetics

2.                  Large deformation solid mechanics constitutive behavior: Stress response functions, material symmetry: orthotropy, transverse isotropy, etc. Compressible and incompressible materials.

3.                  Boundary value problems in finite deformation solid mechanics.

4.                  Linearization of kinematics, kinetics,  and constitutive laws for small deformations

5.                  Boundary value problems in linear elasticity

6.                  Topics in linear elasticity: plate theory, membrane theory, second order beam theory.
