Online Learning and Collaboration Tools
We will be using the following apps for online learning and collaboration:
- Inspace, for any online office hours. You can find a short 2-min introduction to Inspace here>> . You can log in with your Brown Google Suite credentials. Links to the spaces will be provided in the tutorial and office hour schedules. If you have issues connecting to inspace, please see this link>> . If you don't find a solution on the webpage uset the chat button on the bottom right of the page to ask for help.
- Miroboard (a whiteboard app that integrates with inspace). If you have a tablet or pc with pen capability (eg an ipad or surface) we suggest writing your homework solutions in Miroboard. This will make it easy to share your work with TAs or faculty during office hours. You can save your board to pdf for canvas upload once you are done. There is a good guide to Miroboard for education (from Melbourne School of Design) here>>
- Inspace works best on Chrome, so you'll need that too. You can get Chrome here if you don't already have it. If you are using an iPad/iPhone, use Safari, and make sure your iOS is up to date.
- A Slack workspace for written Q&A and help with assignments; you can also create your own channels to collaborate on projects, etc. Use your Brown email to join the workspace. There is a quick-start guide here>>
- We suggest using Slack in Chrome with the LaTeX extension installed so you can read and write messages containing equations. To enter an equation, use, eg $$x^2+y^2 = \zeta$$ for an inline equation, or $$$ e^{i \pi} = -1$$$ for display equations.
- You might find Google Drive for Desktop helpful for sharing files and matlab codes with TAs in office hours - you can do this through the Browser version of Google Drive but the desktop version is a bit less clunky. You can find it on the CIS webpage here>>
- You will probably find it helpful to install MATLAB on your laptop or desktop - it will work through remoteapp but a local installation will run much better. You can download MATLAB from Brown CIS here>
- If you like LaTeX (free typesetting system used to publish math) you can get it here
