MATERIALS SCIENCE Engineering 41 Fall 2004 |
|
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Prof. Eric Chason and Prof. Janet Rankin
EN41 - Is the first course in materials Science.
In this course we will investigate a
wide range of materials, their properties,
and the processing routes used in their
fabrication and optimization.
Topics of study will include:
atomic bonding; crystal structure;
diffusion in solids;
defects in crystals; mechanical
behavior of materials;
phase diagrams and their utilization;
heat treatment of metals and alloys;
electrical, optical, and magnetic
properties of materials;
strengthening mechanisms in solids;
corrosion, and oxidation.
