Outline of EN3 Advanced Section

The advanced section of EN3 will meet for lecture Tuesday and Thursday from 9 - 10:20 a.m. (Barus and Holley room 168) and twice a week for section, on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The advanced section will cover the same fundamental topics of statics (see below) as the regular session, but will go at a pace and depth that is more comfortable for this particular student group. These fundamental topics will be presented through detailed case studies of engineering systems such as  the design of bicycle frames, braking systems, suspensions, and  transmission.  Other case studies are drawn a range of areas of engineering including biomechanics, structural and aerospace engineering.

  1. Forces  

  2. Moment of a force, Force couples, pure moments, and torques 

  3. Friction

  4. Dynamic and Static Equilibrium conditions

  5. Constraint and reaction forces (and moments) at joints and contacts

  6. Internal forces in slender members 

  7. Deformation and failure in slender 2-force members  

  8. Designing pin jointed frames using energy methods
