The first time that Pinocchio
will have ears is when he has donkey ears. Yet, when Lampwick asks
Pinocchio is there
is anything wrong with his ears (since they are each trying to make
the other confess to the unusual asinine growth that they are experiencing),
the puppet responds “Never! Except that since this morning one
of my ears has been killing me.” It seems that Collodi has forgotten
that Geppetto never gave his puppet ears. Or, perhaps, Pinocchio’s
ears grew by themselves? In any event, this is inexplicable growth,
somewhat like the growth of Pinocchio’s endless
nose. Mazzanti, the illustrator, also seems to think that Pinocchio was given (or grew) ears at some point during the story. Where did they come from? back to ears |
