Is there a metaphorical heart
in Pinocchio’s trunk?
The puppet’s
ability to love is another argument in support of his humanity.
Love for the Blue Fairy:
When he thinks that she has
died, he cries.
When Pinocchio recognizes the
Blue Fairy despite her aging, he says: “It’s the great
love I have for you that told me so.”
Love for Geppetto:
When Geppetto lies about why he sold his
coat “Because
it made me hot.” “Pinocchio caught the meaning of this answer
at once, and being unable to restrain his heart’s true impulse,
he threw his arms aroung G.’s neck and convered his face with kisses.” (emphasis
mine) As well as love, this shows Pinocchio’s capacity for understanding
Geppetto’s implicit meaning, which is quite a great step beyond
the average artificial being. |
