It is not natural for Pinocchio to be able to
stay under water for 50 minutes (as he does when the buyer throws him
-- as a donkey -- into the
ocean to drown him). If he had human lungs they would fill up with water.
Collodi does not give the reader any
details about the workings of Pinocchio's internal system ----Pinocchio
is, after all, a puppet by design -- whereas Villiers de L'Isle Adam
does. (See description of Edison's
Hadaly.)
Hadaly's lungs are made of a golden phonograph. Her impermeable skin
keeps her
insides from getting wet.
