In the second part of Collodi’s tale, nasal growth becomes associated with lying: Pinocchio lies to the Blue Fairy about his gold coins: “As soon as he told a lie, his nose, which was already long, immediately grew another two inches” (Chapter XVII). Unnatural indeed!
