term meaning "next to" or "towards" Egypt, often used in conjunction with Alexandria (Alexandria ad Aegyptum). The city's epithet refers to its relative geographical isolation from the rest of Egypt, though most of its economy relied upon its hinterlands and the Nile Delta. However, the city is anything but isolated in an economic and political sense, as its location on the Mediterranean places it in a larger geopolitical region, pulling the city in many different directions.
