Literally translated, 'the waterway of Joseph'. The canal which runs from the Nile to the Faiyyum Oasis.
Originally a natural waterway, it was later enlarged in pharaonic times in order to create Lake Moeris in the Faiyyum. It is built into the natural incline of the Nile Valley, which allows water to flow along it year round.
In later times, its maintenance was neglected and the Bahr Yussef silted up, reducing the size of Lake Moeris.
See also entry for 'Lake Moeris'.
