Roman emperor known for his persecution of Christians.  The Coptic church begins their calendar, "The Age of Martyrs" in 284 AD, the first year of Diocletian's reign, in memory of those martyred under his harsh rule.  In Egypt, Diocletion instituted more taxes, price limits on some goods and services, and military construction.  In 297, he also faced a revolt based in Alexandria to install L. Domitius Domitianus as emperor.
