Harrison Stark: Heraclius (575-641) was the final Roman emperor to rule over Egypt before the Arab conquests. Weakened by a drawn-out war with the Sassanian empire, his Byzantine forces were unable to put up any real resistance to the invading Muslim armies. Supposedly having studied the Qu'ran, somewhat counter-intuitively Heraclius holds a favorable place in the Islamic literary imagination; he is discussed at length and portrayed as a wise, just, ruler.
