Palestrina Mosaic

Uploaded Image

The mosaic dates from the 1st century BCE (late Hellenistic) and is an example of Roman fascination with Egypt (exoticism). Contrasting with the dry, sandy imagery of pharoanic pyramids and deserts, the Roman artist presents Egypt with fertile, lush imagery. The ordered soldiers, boats, and architecture, are juxtaposed with the wild animals and Nubians in the top part of the mosaic. The boats are an important means of travel in Egypt as the Nile was often a much more effective means of transportation than attempting to drag wheels through the sandy land.

Rome eventually came to takeover Egypt as a province.
