The facade of the temple of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel - how is it like a pylon? What's going on in the middle?

The engaged statues in the shrine of the main Abu Simbel temple. From left, Ptah, Amun-Re, Ramesses II, Ra-Horakhty. This picture is taken in natural light one of the days a year the sun shines down the central axis of the temple and illuminates the statues. (Note that Ptah, a creator god even more primeval than Amun-Re, is not illuminated directly - this is unlikely to be an accident.)
