This was our second week in the lab. We spent the time breaking down the mixed SUs on the drying trays into discrete assemblages based on material i.e. all the glass was grouped together, as were the smoking artifacts and the ceramics. In order to retain a record of each artifact's provenance we had to put the artifacts from each SU in seperate paper bags labelled with the trench and SU information. This lead to the covering of every surface in the lab with hundreds of little paper bags. Maybe next semester a student will want to do an independant study on the material and will have the time to assign each object its own accession number, like last year. Most of the work got done within the class period but some of the assemblages were too large to finish in one class period, such as glass and ceramics - even with multiple people working on them. These will be finished off next week.
In the meantime, however, Thanksgiving looms large. See you after the Holiday!
