For the most part, the fountain received a positive reception.
From the Providence Journal, July 25 1899:
“The fountain designed by Miss Yandell, which is to occupy a position in the centre of the parkway in front of the new passenger station, is a work that cannot fail to attract the attention of visitors to Providence, as well as residents of the city.”
Richard Ladegast:
“The silhouette formed by the mass of the fountain is most interesting and successful from all points of view. The lines of the composition are large and dignified, especially noticeable in the modeling of the individual figures, which is well studied and technically excellent. The mass is full of color and movement.”
From the New York Herald:
“The whole group is extremely clever, full of movement and shows a perfect mastery of detail.”
However, some critics gave Enid Yandell’s work less than glowing reviews.
Loredo Taft, Enid Yandell’s former instructor:
“In this work she tried the difficult experiment of a combination of figures of various scales. The result is confusing, but certain features of the struggling group are fine indeed. There is a back of noble, Amazon-like woman which would do honor to any of our sculptors.”
