Writing Assignment 1: Visual Analysis of a Museum object
(Unknown File)
This assignment involves a visit to the Rhode Island School of Design Museum (or the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston if you are feeling adventurous). Please select an artifact or work of art of your liking that is on exhibit and spend some time with it. This object could be from any time period or geography, although you are encouraged to write on an ancient artifact.
You are expected to write a short paper about the object (4-5 pages- not longer not shorter- double space, 12 font). Make sure to work with an object that you feel connected to and spend time around it. Making a sketch or a drawing of the object, or taking a series of careful photographs may be an excellent way of engaging with it intimately, paying attention to its details, its iconography. Library research about the object is not very necessary since this is more of an exercise in looking and seeing. Try to describe the object in as much detail as possible, talking about its pictorial representations, material, techniques of making, scale and proportion etc.
You are encouraged to look up particular concepts such as style, iconography, narrative, representation, symbolism in the online Grove Dictionary art (see below for the link).
Along with your paper, please provide a sketch, drawing or a photograph of your object.
Due: September 29, Monday, in class and posted on this page below.
