I titled this page such, because recently in German class I was asked to define my Heimat, or homeland. In German, your Heimat can refer to either a country, city or region by which you define your upbringing or history. For me, my hometown is San Diego - in southern California - despite the fact that I was born in Long Beach (Los Angeles county also in socal). Although many may argue that San Diego is not the best city in the U.S., I do not believe many will argue when I say that it does in fact have the best weather. Temperate and beautiful. When you watch old t.v. shows which glamorize southern California as this gorgeous beach land, where people surf all day and barbeque during cool November nights, you think "no this couldn't be!" But oh, it is true. And I never appreciated my fine city until I left it for college and went to that terrible city to the north, Los Angeles. Los Angeles, is not a city of angels, do not be fooled. I explain this because I inadvertently define San Diego by a lens smeared with dirt left by L.A. So when I see San Diego, I see a city free of major traffic, free of a less than appetizing haze of smog, and free from "acteurs." It is marked by exceptional monuments, celebrating its unique attributes: the World Famous San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Balboa Park and associated Museums, Sea World, Old Town where you can find homemade tortillas still served in restaurants, home to golf tournaments, the Del Mar Fair, and the Del Mar Horse Races. Home to over a million people, San Diego is oddly spread out for a city requiring a vehicle to travel anywhere in the city. However, it is due to its great space that it remains unsoiled by miserable traffic and insane crowds of people. It holds true to its beach-town feel while offering you all the benefits of a large city – like an expanse of restaurants, concerts, art shows, theater productions and conventions. San Diego – where the turf meets the surf!
