Project Description

This project was developed to provide a forum for Anthropology Department's graduate student community. Students were interested in having a space in which they could share information related to the process of successfully progressing through the graduate program. Of particular interest was the sharing of:

Prior to the development of this wiki, this information was available primarily via word of mouth. The wiki format instead allows for decentralized access to information - a useful prospect for a community which is typically dispersed around the world. Thus a community can be maintained even across great distances.

Development Process

As this wiki will contain sensitive/personal materials (i.e. grant and prelim proposals), their creators wished to limit availability to the Anthro Grad community only. This is a closed forum wiki, linked off the Anthro Grad Program page .

In addition, the initial wiki pages were designed specifically to aid in the usability of the wiki by users with a wide range of experience using wikis. Many examples of wiki coding were provided on the pages including examples of posting files, and creating bullets and links. Users can then just follow these models to enter their own data. Help files were also altered to address issues that would be encountered in this particular wiki such as getting posted files to be properly placed on a page.

This wiki is a dynamic web page which can be altered to reflect the needs of the Anthro Grad community.

Response

In general the response to this project has been very positive. Graduate students are very excited about having this resource set up. Nevertheless, there has been very little activity (i.e. additions) to the wiki so far. Still, we are all rather busy with our own work and I know that a number of students have spoken to me about just not getting the chance to use the wiki yet. I have recently sent out a reminder to encourage people to post anything they can manage. I believe, though, that given a bit of time, this wiki will be a sucessful resource for our community.

chris witmore: Excellent work Michelle! Now that the project has been running for a couple of weeks what kind of feedback/interaction are you getting from the graduate community?
