Course Description
Over the course of history, the human ability to design, produce, and adapt materials to meet particular needs has been a powerful influence in the emergence and development of cultural traditions, complex civilizations, technological innovations, and societal changes. This course is an introduction to archaeological science, presented from the perspectives of archaeology, anthropology, and engineering (specifically materials science). Archaeological science analyzes the development of materials, technologies of production, and associated social interactions over time using both scientific instrumental techniques and theoretical contributions from engineering, archaeology and other social sciences.
Students will be introduced to a range of archaeomaterials and the methodologies, instrumentation, and interpretive approaches that can be used to understand them scientifically and within their broader cultural and historical contexts. These applications will be introduced through lectures, discussions, hands-on laboratory work and exercises, guest speakers, and interdisciplinary group research. During the group research, students will have the opportunity to work with imaging and analytical techniques (microscopy, SEM, EDS, XRD, XRF), analytical protocols, sample preparation, and methods for studying inorganic materials. read more...
