Mansa Musa was the king of the Mali empire in the 14th century and was renowned for his wealth. When he passed through Cairo-Fustat on his way to hajj, the amount of gold he infused into the economy was so great that it caused an incredible amount of inflation.
His presence reminds us that there were economically vibrant Muslim empires in Africa, a fact often neglected by European and Near Eastern-oriented scholarship.
