Joey: The most important and famous of the Abassid Caliphs, this fellow was contemporary with Charlemagne and, according to Hodges and Whitehouse, had a non-zero amount of contact with his European counterpart. Furthermore, they cite his gold as funding (through a roundabout traderoute through Russia and Scandinavia) Charlemagne's political career (the building of churches, economic reforms, etc).

What projects was harun al-rashid involved in - i.e. what did he do that was so important? Harun al-rashid was a great builder and an effective military commander both on the eastern and western fronts. Culturally, why was his reighn seen to be the hieght of the early Islamic golden age?
