Andrea Richardson: The Sasanian Empire was the last pre-Islamic Iranian Empire and one of the two super-powers of Western Asia during late-antiquity. The Sasainian Empire lasted for more than 400 years and eventually fell to the Arab Caliphate. It is considered by many to be one of the most important and influential periods of Persian civilization. Its art, culture, and institutions had a profound impact on the Islamic world after Muslim conquest. It is also important to note that the Sasanian Empire completely folds during the Islamic conquest whereas the Byzantine empire, the other super-power, does not.
