A'isha was Abu Bakr's daughter and Muhammad's third wife. This marriage gave Abu Bakr a certain level of legitimacy when claiming to be the successor of Muhammad. A'isha was Muhammad's favorite wife and it was in her company that he did some of his best thinking. She was a well educated woman and was one of the main sources for the hadith.
