Amsar were military camp cities built in the newly conquered territories under Muslim authority. The sections of these cities were divided among the different tribal regiments. The cities often became large Islamic metropolises and served as militaristic bases and administrative centers for collecting taxes. The misr Fustat, for example, became the capital of Egypt and later grew into modern-day Cairo.

ian: One key feature was that they sought to separate Muslim settlers from the local inhabitants of the conquered areas. This, however, did not happen in Syria.
