The Almoravids were a Berber dynasty that controlled much of northern Africa and the Iberian peninsula during the 11th century. They were a rough and puritanical during their time. They were founded by Abd Allah ibn Yasin who forcefully converted many tribes. Their rule was never entirely stable and they were defeated by the Almohads in the 12th century.

ian: Their coming was in part a result of the christian Spanicsh reconquista. but also deomstrated growing links between N. Africa and Spain.
