Here is the final review session power point.
FinalExamRview.pdf
- It has an outline of the components of the exam on it, as well.
Slide Identifications
for each image, I expect you to include:
- name/type of object (e.g., The Warrior Vase)
- location - where it was found (e.g., Mycenae)
- Relative date (e.g., LH IIIC)
- Absolute date (e.g., 1200-1100 BCE)
- Significance - describe it, talk about why it's important, what we can tell from it
- these will only be taken from the second half of the semester - the Mycenaean period; they will include both architecture and objects
Slide Comparison
- I will put up two objects side by side - one from the Minoan period and one from the Myceanean period
- for each, I expect you to include all of the information you would include on a regular slide identification, and then for "significance", I expect you to compare the objects and what they tell us (similarities or differences) between the two cultures
Essay Question Topics
Mycenaean (short essay - 20 minutes)
- Trade and Exchange
- Administration and Social Organization
- Burial Practices
- Development of Socio-political Complexity
Minoan vs. Mycenaean (long essay - 40 minutes)
- Trade and Exchange
- Administration and Social Organization
- Burial Practices
- Development of Socio-political Complexity
- for this essay, I want you to think about the different types of evidence available, as well as the similarities and differences between the two societies
Notes and Advice:
- for both essays, I expect you to drawn upon the readings and material culture that we discussed in class (i.e., sites, objects, etc.); the more specific and detailed, the better the essay
- this exam should display the range of your knowledge, so while the topics for both are generally similar, I would expect you to choose different topics for each
- while it is not forbidden, I would advise against writing essays on the same topic as your research paper, although you can draw on your research
- if you would like to focus on one aspect of these topics for your essay (e.g., for Mycenaean administration, you could choose to focus on Linear B), I would expect you to mention the other forms of evidence that are available in some detail
GOOD LUCK!
