Notes: Book 3, chapter 2, “Beschreibung von Brasilien”, contains a dialogue between a Brazilian and a European, printed in parallel columns (Erster Abschnit, section 23, v. 2, p. 412-415), followed by brief vocabulary lists including colors, body parts, and kinship terms in “Brazilianisch” with German equivalents, and a dozen conversational phrases (section 23r, p. 415-416). The dialogue is an abridged and modified version of that found in Jean de Léry, Histoire d’un voyage fait en la terre du Bresil, first published La Rochelle, 1578 (“Colloque de l’entree ou arrivee en la terre du Bresil entre les gens du pays nommez Tououpinambaoults or Toupinenquin”, chapter 20, p. 340-377); another German version appears in Léry, Des Herrn Johann von Lery Reise in Brasilien, published Münster, 1794 (“Gespräch... zwischen den Eingebornen Tuupinambolsiern Tuupinenkin”, chapter 20, p. 331-360). Volume 1, chapter 14, “Von der Sprache”, contains historical and comparative observations on Eurasian and American languages, with several references to Iroquois and Huron as well as mentions of Amazon, Sioux, Mississippi, Quebec, St. Lawrence, Carolina, Virginia and other regions/languages (p 490-504). Printed in Gothic type. Compiled and translated by Johann Friedrich Schröter from various sources, including J.A. Lafitau, Moeurs des sauvages ameriquains; P.F.X. de Charlevoix; Antonio de Ulloa and Jorge Juan, Relación histórica del viage a la América meridional; C. Leslie, New and exact account of Jamaica.
