Notes: Study in Latin of Mapuche language and music, originally written in Spanish between 1753 and 1765 (title of manuscript: Chilidugo ó Lengua de los Indos de el reyno de Chile). In 7 parts; parts 1-5, spanning volumes 1-3, consist of 865 sections with continuous numbering; detailed table of contents for Parts 1-3 (v.1, p. [4-12]) refers to section numbers. Both page and section numbers are given below to reflect complex cross-referencing among materials in the two languages. Part 1, "Chilensis linguae grammatica”, an Araucanian [Mapuche] grammar in Latin, includes copious Mapuche examples and idiomatic expressions with Latin equivalents, as well as a letter in Mapuche addressed by Andrés Febrés to Havestadt (v.1, p. [1]-186; sections 1-299). Part 2, "Indiculus universalis R.P. Pomey soc. Jesu in linguam Chilensen translatus, additisque exemplis quam plurimis ad facilius addiscendum auctus" (v.1, p. 187-535; sections 300-574), includes questions and answers on the natural world, given in both languages, and extensive Latin-Mapuche vocabulary lists, arranged thesaurus-style with cross-references to relevant sections in other parts. Part 3, “Catechismus in prosa & versu” in Mapuche only (v. 2, p. 537-599; sections 575-675) includes “Catechismus in Versu” (v.2, p. 582-599; sections 650-675) which was accompanied by music, available separately but lacking from JCB copy (Part 6, noted on half title (v.3, p. [892]). Part 4, “Voces Indicae ordine alphabetico, adjectisque numeris, ubi singulae plenius & copiosus explicantur” (v.2, p. 601-807; sections 676-858), consists of Mapuche-Latin vocabulary with extensive Latin glosses and references to relevant section numbers in other parts. Part 5, “Voces Latinae eodem ordine, & adjectis numeris”, is an index in Latin referring to section numbers where corresponding Mapuche terms are presented in context, further enhancing the complementarity of the Latin-Mapuche and Mapuche-Latin vocabulary lists; and Dedicatoria, Prologo, Advertencia, etc. in Latin only (v.3, p. [809]-891; sections 859-866). Part 7, “Mappa geographia cum Diario &c.” (v.3, p. 893-951) JCB copy has v. 2 and v. 3 bound together.
