Notes: Consists of prayers and sacraments in English and Mohawk on facing pages, with table of contents and some headings in both languages, some in one language only. Includes several instances of the Lord’s Prayer with minor variations (p. 8-11, 28-29, 42-43, 70-71, 94-95, 412-413, 442-443); Ten Commandments (p. 88-91); catechism (p. 84-101); Biblical texts including Psalms 1, 15, 32 (p. 134-139) and 23, 67, 100, 103, 117, 134 (p. 486-495); Genesis 1-3 and Matthew 1, 2, 5 (p. 138-175); Mark (entire, p. 176-341), dated “August 1744, Joseph Thayendanegea” (p. 341); and numerous brief Biblical excerpts arranged under thematic headings (p. 2-5, 36-39, 342-411, 436-437, 476-477, 480-481); several hymns in Mohawk only (p. 495, 497, 501-505). Mezzotint engravings are titled in English and Mohawk. Material varies significantly in content and sequence from New York, 1715 edition; this text is closer to New York, 1769 edition than to that edition. Added English t.p.: “The book of Common prayer ... formerly collected, and translated into the Mohawk language under the direction of the missionaries of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, to the Mohawk Indians.
