Notes: Ms. codex. Title supplied by cataloguer. Manuscript devotional manual in the Tarascan of Mexico, but with section headings in Spanish or Latin; occasionally with heading in Tarascan. Text in black ink, chiefly in an italic hand, with headings and initials in red ink. Without a title page and lacking at least one page at end of text; leaf 39v ends with catchword “anima”. Unsigned; attributed to Aparicio Maya on the basis of handwriting, subject, and place of origin. Title from the description by seller, Nicolás León; León dated the item as seventeenth century, but it strongly resembles other manuals drafted by Aparicio Maya in the mid-nineteenth century. Initial leaf [1] begins with heading: Bendicion de la mesa antes de Comer. Leaf 1 begins with heading: Perçigneñe Cruzis. Includes four small head drawings and a decorated initial.

The author was a Franciscan priest who was actively writing in Tarajero, Michoacán de Ocampo, Mexico in the late 1830's and 1850's. The manuscripts held by the John Carter Brown Library are dated between 1838 and 1853. Headings are in Spanish and text is in the Tarascan language with some Spanish loan words. First line of text on leaf [1] recto, 1st count: Ben[e]dicion de la mesa antes de comer. Text composed in black ink with highlights and rubrics in red; there is an illustrated headpiece above caption title on leaf 1 recto, 2nd count.
