Notes: Ms. codex. Manuscript Spanish-Zoque dictionary, copied in 1733 from one originally compiled in 1652 and attributed to the Dominican father Juan Pozarenco. The dictionary lists words and phrases in Spanish from “A” to “Xaula”, followed by their equivalents in Zoque. List of words with the letter “X” is incomplete, reflecting the loss of one leaf. The date 1733 in title is a later insertion. The first part of the original ms. (prior to leaf 56) appears possibly to be: Doctrina christiana en lengua tzoque, sequida de un confessionario, y del modo de dar el viatico á lost enfermos, en la misma lengua / Juan Pozarenco, a ms. of 38 leaves in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris (Ms. Amér. 68). That devotional manual, including also several specialized Spanish-Zoque glossaries, was dated Aug. 22, 1696; the signature of Juan Pozarenco was crossed out and replaced with that of Father Luis Molina. Pozarenco arrived from Spain in 1688 and ascended to higher offices in Guatemala in the decade before 1711. Attribution of this dictionary’s authorship to Luis González is based on his role as author of: Arte breve en lengua Tzoque conforme se habla en el pueblo de Tecpatlán; dividese en dos partes... / lo todo compuesto por el padre fray Luis Gonzalez, de la orden de Predicadores. Año de 1672 [i.e. 1652] (42, 291 p.). However, the vocabulary in this copy is dated 1792.
