Notes: Consists of prayers and sacraments in Mohawk, with table of contents and some headings in English and Mohawk, some in one language only. Includes several instances of the Lord’s Prayer (p. 31-32, 41, p. 157, p. 174, p. 185, p. 193); catechism (p. 50-60); Biblical texts including Psalms 1, 15, 32 (p. 93-97) and 23, 67, 100, 103, 117, 134 (p. 196-201), Genesis 1-3, Matthew 1, 2, 5 (p. 98-117), and numerous brief excerpts from Scripture arranged under thematic headings (p. 118-157, p. 160-161, 170). Contents and pagination very close to 1769 edition for of p. 3-179, after which pagination diverges; concludes with 3 hymns not included in 1769 edition (p. 204-208). Prayers p. 157-195 do not appear in New York, 1715 edition.
“Revised with corrections and additions by Daniel Clause, Esq., P.T. Agent for the Six Nation Indians in the Province of Quebec” (title page). Because the New York, 1769 edition was “replete with mistakes... those Mohawks who fled in the course of the American Rebellion to Canada... petitioned His Excellency General Haldimand to have a new edition printed... The mode of spelling which has been adopted by this edition is the most familiar the Indians are now acquainted with, making use of only sixteen letters in the alphabet... So that by these means the Mohawk language has been brought to a kind of orthographical standard” (Advertisement, p. [3-4]). The New York, 1769 edition was translated by William Andrews, Henry Barclay and John Ogilvie (cf. Pilling).
JCB has 2 copies. JCB copy 2 has manuscript notation on title page leaf: “Quebec 5th Sept. 1780. This is to certify that this is a true copy corrected by one from the original Mohawk prayer book. Daniel Claus, P.T. agent to the 6 Nat[ion]s Departm[ent].”
