Notes: Volume 1 (imprint date An VI [1797-1798]), contains comparative data, derived from Cook, Dixon, and Chanal, on languages of the islands of Nootka Sound and Tchinkitane bay, as well as the Queen Charlotte islands located between Nootka and Tchinkitane. Numbers 1-10 in these languages are listed (v.1, p. 284) in order to show that the three have no linguistic affinity with one another; remarks on the Tchinkitane counting system follow. “Vocabulaire de Tchinkîtâné, côte nord-ouest de l’Amérique, à 57 degrés de latitude nord” (p. 585-591) lists nearly 100 terms in French with corresponding Tchinkitane terms in 2 different phonetic transciptions (attributed to Chanal and Roblet), preceded by brief remarks on pronunciation. Six additional terms of the Queen Charlotte islands language (“tels que le capitaine Chanal a pu les recueillir à Cloak-Bay”) are given with French equivalents (p. 361). JCB has 2 copies; copy 2 imperfect.
